Charles River School, located in Dover, Massachusetts just west of Boston provides a challenging and rewarding academic experience for children in PreKindergarten through eighth grade.  Founded in 1911, the school’s mission seeks to create a community characterized by curiosity and exploration, as well as respect for self and others.  In an intellectually and culturally rich environment of small classes, hands-on engagement, and personal attention from teachers and mentors, today’s students learn critical thinking, analytical reasoning, cogent speaking and writing, and both logical and creative problem-solving skills.  With a student enrollment of 200+ drawn from 28 towns, Charles River School values diversity and works to maintain an inclusive community. The school program includes strong academics, arts and athletics.

Since 2004, the school has transformed its campus by raising $11.8 million through two capital campaigns, which increased and enhancedinstructional spaces, and added endowment.  Just completed is a $1.75 million major gift effort to expand technology, boost faculty compensation, enlarge the library and provide funds for authentic global experiencesfor students and faculty to further enhance the curriculum. To achieve the goals of the 2011-16 Strategic Plan, the school will expand its major gift and capital campaign efforts. We raise $500,000 for our Annual Fund.

This is an exciting time to join the leadership team at Charles River School.  A new Head of School, Gretchen Larkin, currently Head of Milton Academy’s Lower School, will begin her post on July 1, 2014. The current Head, Catherine Gately, is retiring from CRS at the end of June 2014, after 21 years.

The current Director of Development, Linda Fenton, is retiring from CRS in March 2014.

Charles River School seeks an experienced and dynamic fund-raising professional to serve as Director of Advancement. This position will be filled immediately upon completion of our search process or as negotiated with successful candidates.  Working closely with the Board of Trustees and Head of School, The Director of Advancement is a member of the school’s senior administrative leadership team.  This high-profile position requires a person who will be responsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive cultivation, solicitation and stewardshipprogram to support both current operations and the strategic objectives of the school. It is essential the ideal candidate has experience with securing leadership level gifts that support the school’s strategic plan. The new Director of Advancement must be self-motivated, have outstanding presentation and written skills, and excel in developing relationships throughout the extended CRS community. A staff of twoadditional professionals in the advancement office helps the Director manage all fund-raising activities, alumni and graduate parent relations, database integrity and volunteer engagement. We maintain a close collaborative relationship with admissions staffand marketing/communications.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred)
  • 7+ years experience in an institutional advancement office in an educational setting or similar not-for-profit organization
  • Demonstrated success in developing and leading a broad-based fundraising program that includes major gift effort and annual giving programs (experience with capital campaigns a plus)
  • Experience in prospect tracking, stewardship and reporting procedures, annual giving programs
  • An open and collaborative management style
  • Understanding of school cultures and sensitivities, including significant experience building relationships with parents, alumni and the community
  • Experience with planned giving program
  • Willingness to travel and attend events outside of school hours
  • High level of integrity, strong work ethic, sense of humor

Principal Accountabilities:

Fundraising

  • Devises strategies and implement plans to achieve maximum annual giving, capital giving and planned giving with office staff, Trustees, Head, Development Committee and volunteers.
  • Possesses knowledge and experience in prospect tracking of annual and major gift prospective donors.
  • Assists Head of School with materials, prospect information, and solicitations.
  • Understands how to effectively market and communicate the mission and values of the school.
  • Prepares monthly reports for the Board of Trustees.
  • Motivates, advises, mentors and evaluates the development staff.
  • Oversees database integrity.
  • Works collaboratively, positively and effectively with all members of the CRS community.

Alumni Council

  • Provides assistance with selecting Alumni Council Chairs and members; overseeing engagement program.
  • Connects and educates alumni about mission, strategic initiatives and future goals through personal visits, reunion activities, social media, print & website, community service and stewardship efforts.

Outreach to community

  • Implements a year-long set of activities to all constituents to strengthen ties to school.
  • Oversees organization of and recruitment for two yearly Advisory Board meetings.
  • Ensures two issues of The Current feature articles supporting mission; one issue contains Annual Giving Report.

Stewardship

  • Oversees and implements stewardship activities for major donors, donors to the Richard Thorndike Society (planned gifts), to families with named endowments including updates on fund performance on a yearly basis.
  • Organizes major development initiatives and cultivation events.

Admissions, marketing/Communications

  • Coordinates with these offices on marketing messages and community actions.

This is a full-time, full-year administrative position with medical and dental insurance and a retirement fund.
