Executive Director – Greater Boston Legal Services

Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS) seeks to replace its Executive Director who is retiring after 20 years in the position.

GBLS, founded in 1900, is the primary provider of free, civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and families in 32 cities and towns in the Boston, Massachusetts area. GBLS serves approximately 15,000 clients annually, ranging from brief service to full representation. In addition to representing individuals, GBLS handles class actions and other impact cases and provides community education. GBLS is a national leader in poverty law. It has achieved numerous successes in litigation, administrative advocacy and legislative advocacy in areas such as affordable housing, employment law, family law, health and disability benefits, immigration law, unemployment law, tenant rights and welfare law.

GBLS is the largest legal services program in New England, with an annual budget of about $12 million dollars. It raises funds from more than fifty funding sources including about $3 million annually from the Greater Boston legal community. GBLS does not accept funding from the Legal Services Corporation and is not subject to its advocacy restrictions. GBLS is a unionized program with a total staff of 115 employees.

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated understanding of and compassion for the realities of clients living in poverty.
  • Demonstrated commitment to aggressive legal advocacy on behalf of poor people.
  • Significant experience in providing strategic organizational leadership, including:


  •         -setting and achieving short-term and long-term operational goals,
            -setting and achieving short-term and long-term fiscal goals, and
            -visionary leadership in times of fiscal challenge.

  • Significant experience in leading and managing professionals.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills with a variety of audiences, including professionals and staff, community and client organizations, legislators and other public officials, funders, donors, and other supporters, and colleagues in other legal and social services programs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity as an organizational priority.
  • Strong understanding of non-profit finances, budgeting, and governance.
  • Ability to work effectively with unions.
