The Media Field Strategist (MFS) is a combination of media strategist, field organizer and public relations individual with the primary responsibility of building and sustaining relationships with local LGBT and allied organizations. The MFS is also responsible for monitoring and responding to regional print and broadcast media as it pertains to GLAAD's mission and current strategic plan. The MFS will cultivate and maintain professional relationships with journalists in the mainstream and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender press in local and state markets.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and Implement strategic plans and priorities within the region.
  • Based on pre-determined goals, connect local activists and individuals with GLAAD’s campaign work, providing them meaningful ways to be involved.
  • Maintain active contact with local and regional LGBT organizations, giving media support and formal trainings when deemed appropriate.
  • Produce and implement media plans for state and local and statewide groups within region.
  • Represent GLAAD on coalitions and campaigns for LGBT equality within the defined region.
  • Develop and implement visibility campaigns with targeted communities.
  • Develop, supervise and implement earned media campaigns within region.
  • Monitor assigned regional media outlets on a daily basis and direct coverage of issues pertaining to the LGBT community to be fair, accurate and inclusive.
  • Monitor legislative, judicial, electoral and social issues and climate as it pertains to LGBT people within assigned regions.
  • Monitor public opinion data and media coverage in order to support the development of effective messaging for specific campaigns and situations.
  • Maintain and grow current contacts, or access to contacts/spokespeople, for regional LGBT and mainstream media outlets and journalists.
  • Adhere to media protocol for outreach and response to journalists, as well as systems for internal communications.
  • Plan, write and edit news materials to include releases, blog posts, “Calls to Action,” letters to media professionals and other documents as needed, as they pertain to regional media and the current campaign.
  • Act as a spokesperson for GLAAD, giving comment and commentary in various regional media when appropriate.
  • Supervise and grow volunteer rapid response teams in region, maintaining targeted volunteers to help with the tasks of monitoring and responding.
  • The work of GLAAD resembles a campaign-style work environment; there is always a high level of energy, excitement and activity for everyone in the organization; preparing for the next events/activities to accomplish our important media advocacy work, fighting the defamation against the LGBT community and changing hearts and minds about our need for full equality. Staff members are expected to consciously and continuously promote the mission, values, programs, and impact of the organization when presented with opportunities for participating in membership development and reaching out to personal connections on behalf of GLAAD.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Required: 3-5 years experience working with community-based organizations.
  • Required: Degree and/or substantial experience in journalism, communications, political science or public relations or equivalent level of work experience.
  • Required: Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Strong Plus: Bilingual, Spanish/English competency.
  • Demonstrated experience with media and the LGBT community in their assigned region.
  • Proven track record of leadership skills within prior work experience.2-3 years experience managing volunteers, interns and coalitions highly preferred.
  • Experience working in grassroots communities on political or issue campaigns is highly desired.
  • Public speaking experience, including presentations, delivering skills-building trainings and media interviews.
  • Demonstrated success and strength in writing, reporting or placing media coverage.
  • Experience in both LGBT and mainstream media preferred.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of LGBT political, cultural and social organizations in their region.
  • Strong working knowledge of issues regarding LGBT advancement or demonstrated capacity to understand issues quickly and competently.
  • Experience working and organizing effectively within diverse communities (i.e. race, age, ethnicity and sexual identities).
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines and desire to be a self-starter.

Supervision:

The Media Field Strategist reports to the Director of News and Field Media and does not have any direct full time reports but may, from time to time, supervise volunteers/interns and/or a fellow.

Compensation:

This is a full time, exempt level position. Salary commensurate with experience.
