Basic Function and Responsibilities:
Coordinate, implement and monitor compliance and coding standards and policies to ensure the University of Iowa Physicians (UIP) practice receives full and accurate reimbursement for services that comply with coding and payment rules and regulations. Assign CPT and/or ICD-9 diagnosis codes for all UIP services. Adopt and incorporate initiatives that improve compliance and reduce risks to the institution.
Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- HIM certification as RHIT or RHIA or coding certification (i.e. CPC, CCS, etc) through nationally recognized credentialing body such as AHIMA or AAPC or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Equivalency is defined as possessing a Certified Coding Associate (CCA) and receiving full certification within 18 months of hire or 2 years of previous coding experience and receiving full certification within 18 months of hire.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Proficiency in computer software applications is required.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
Highly Desirable Qualifications:
- Reasonable (1-3 years) experience with medical billing and coding is highly desirable.
- Previous supervisory experience is highly desirable.
- Knowledge, understanding and experience with CMS regulations or industry standards is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of GE Centricity billing software is highly desirable.
